I am a serial entrepreneur. I have worked in the Brazilian Amazon Basin since 1991, primarily in sustainable development. I work with numerous Brazilian federal and state organizations focusing on sustainable development, education and indigenous animal rescue, rehabilitation and repatriating them to their natural environment.
Sustainable development is what more can you do with what you already have, and not disrupting the environment doing so. Cupuacu is one of those sustainable projects. Back in 1995, while traveling throughout the interior of the state of Amazonas - Brazil, searching for large natural/wild growth swaths of Cupuacu, I was lead to a large clearing, in the middle of this incredibly dense jungle where I saw the most astonishing spring pool I have ever seen. I’ve seen many springs and spring streams through the Amazon interior, but nothing like this. PIXAR could not possibly created the vision nature had provided and saw before my very eyes that day.
Twenty feet in diameter, easily as deep, the most crystal clear water spewing our of the earth, with small bands of the finest powder-like silica sand swirling at the eye of the spring. I leaned over to see if this water, gushing at thousands of gallons an hour, tasted as good as it looked. It did. It was a shocking surprise, as there wasn’t a taste, per se. I tasted and that was it…no mouth feel, after taste…nothing, a little sweet, but definitely nothing like I have ever tasted before – or since.
I set out to understand what I just saw. The Amazon remains the largest rainforest on earth. It also reveals its secrets ever so slowly, and to those who take the time to dig deep, sort-to-speak, to understand her secrets. What I discovered was an artesian spring whose source, lay some 500 feet below the surface of the forest floor, was fed by the largest underground reservoir of fresh water on earth. In fact, this reservoir is larger than the US Great Lakes combined and lies within the truly ancient Precambrian geological phenomena known as the Guiana Shield. The Guiana Shield is massive, lying under six (6) countries, which basically includes the entire northern section of the South American continent.
Just as an aside, a “Shield” is the oldest rock on the planet. There is no original crust to be found on the earth’s surface. However, the rock that makes up this and two other Shields (Canadian and Australian) is “the next best thing”, as the rock that makes up these geological Shield’s are over 3.5 billion years old (the earth is estimated to be 4.1 billion years old). The Guiana Shield, in Brazil, is made up primarily of metaquartz and rose quartz. And a portion of its southern most edge lays within our property where we have numerous springs, all of which are gushing water like a sheared off fire hydrant.
As the title of this posting indicates, The Purest Natural Artesian Spring Water on Earth, what I discovered that day was in fact truly the purest natural spring water ever to be found. Let me explain this over and misused term, ‘purity’. Purity is based upon the TDS, or total dissolved solids. TDS, measured in parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per liter (mg/l), contains minerals, chemical and metals still dissolved and present in the water you are drinking. Metals like Zinc, Chromium, Copper, Nickel, etc., Chemicals, like Arsenic, Bromide, Nitrates, Nitrites and Chloride and finally minerals, like Silica, Calcium and Magnesium.

per premium bottled waters, like Fiji and Evian have TDS levels of 210 ppm and 390 ppm respectively. Everyday low price waters, like Crystal Geyser, Poland Springs, Volvic and Vitel have TDS ratings ranging from 180 up to and exceeding 400 ppm. The water I discovered, known now as EQUA, has a certified TDS value of 2.9 ppm. This is the lowest TDS of any spring water ever discovered, anywhere on earth. Equa water is purity made by Mother Nature, not man, like some other super purified municipal tap waters like Penta, Aquafina and Dasani, just to name a few.
I look forward to bringing this water to US consumer’s the summer of 2008. My next posting will describe how we have painstakingly developed Equa and how it has become part of the local Amazonian fabric of sustainable development as well as benefiting the indigenous people of the region.
